Long time-application user writing:

Home Inventory Manager by Quicken is the slowest and most awkward program I have ever used — or tired to use. Most annoying is its non-intuitive approach to data entry, lack of flexibility, awarkward image importing, and slow, slow performance and screen-redraws. It seems as though some novice ported it from an old Cobol program routine.

Quicken might want to hang its head with shame; it does not belong in the QUICKen family, or on your PC.

After 5 attempts to get this program to recognize my Quicken Home Inventory Classic file I returned the product. I communicated with QHI support staff who did not know their own product and kept referring me to their FAQ instead of answering the specific issue I had (which was not covered in the FAQ). After purchasing Quicken 2008 (which I did not want to do), that program finally recognized my original file and after 3 or 4 tries on my own I got QHI 2008 to load and convert my classic file. Much to my dissapointment QHI 2008 was nowhere near as robust as QHI Classic when it came to reporting. Seems that in giving more functionality in the area of inputting images, they cut back on flexibility/functionality in the reporting area. All in all, quite a dissapointment.

Like many other buyers, I was totally dissatisfied with Quicken Home Inventory. I have a fairly large inventory file created by an older version of QHIM. I had hoped to upgrade to the newer version and import the older file. I found it impossible to satisfactorily install this product and import the older file.

The only reason that I gave it any stars at all was due to Intuit’s prompt refund of my purchase price under their warranty.

Like another reviewer mentioned, this software is very slow. Even the drop down lists on the menu bar are slowly redrawn. For example when you hover your mouse over the “File” or “Edit” menu item, it takes about 1/2 second to redraw the drop down list. This should be instant, at least after selecting the menu item the first time, and the screen redrawing is not clean. This just adds to the overall cheap feel of this software.

I have used Quicken for over 10 years. I thought Intuit would do a decent job on this one since they haven’t changed the “Classic” Home Inventory feature embedded in the Quicken product until now. So, after years and years of the subpar “Classic” version, we get this cheap “upgrade” that is so slow, I’d rather use the “Classic” version.

No real value above the original application came with Quicken. Perhapse the old app is far better at least it is using the same file type being used by Q.

The only benefit is the ability to add pictures which really not a big thing IMHO.
