This book is full of information that is helpful. I am in my second term of taking a Surgical Technology course. We just start the real meat of the course… from patient position, drapes, and starting in a couple of weeks gi surgery. This book has it all and the instruments used in the major and minor tray. We have now the Alexander’s which is good for the breakdown of different surgerical procedures but when it comes to the Surgical Tech’s role there is not much. I’m glad that the AST has finally written a book. It will come handy now and throughout my career as a Surgical Tech. Kudos to AST…well done!

I actually work in Central Sterile Processing. I found this book very useful with the information of surgical procedures, anotomy charts , surgical instruments. Plus it is very clear on its format, easy to understand and follow. This book will answer many questions that students going for surgical technology need or simple just like me, a person who works with surgical instruments on the daily basis.

Let’s face it, there aren’t too many textbooks written specifically for surgical technologists. So this is the basic text and it’s ok. There’s a ton of material and sometimes it’s hard to judge which information is the most pertinent and important (you can’t memorize the whole thing; you have to be able to find the high points). This was the only text used during the first semester of my program.

For the second semester, the instructor also required Alexander’s Care of the Patient in Surgery. She stated that the surg tech book was still the primary resource, but she thought that Alexander’s gave better descriptions of the surgical procedures with the understanding that Alexander’s is written for nurses.

So this textbook probably is the standard for surgical technology programs, partly because no one else has written another one.

This is an excellent book if you are a surgical technology student. I bought this book in addition to my required book for school becuase it was so much better than the required book. It is very descriptive and has lots of helpful pictures. The AST has done a wondeful job with this text book.

This book has many mistakes and is very inacurate to say the least. Our program used this text for our first year of instruction. We found many mistakes, outdated material and misuse in language. This is not a professional text, and caused much confusion in our first year of operation. Please choose another text for your program along with complimentary text for your Surgical Technology teaching. I would not recomend the workbook or the accompanying pocket handbook either.
